Far Cry 5 offers an engaging open-world experience with intense action and exploration.
The open world and compelling story, especially the plot twist at the end, keep players hooked.
One of the reasons I love this game is the "roster" system, allowing players to team up with unique allies.
The co-op gameplay is incredibly fun, letting you explore and complete missions with friends.
The DLCs are also interesting, adding unique adventures like Vietnam, Mars, and zombie-themed gameplay.
Far Cry is one of those games that never gets boring and provides an excellent experience for everyone.

FARCRY is a sandbox franchise in whose every title you are taken to an exotic location overrun with enemy patrols, and have to help the oppressed locals regain their land by taking out the oppressors one area at a time, until the entire map is liberated. This formula remains the same in every Farcry game, only the setting is changed, and the story and characters as well, although they too follow the same principle of an eccentric warlord in charge of all the enemies who has taken your friends hostage or already killed them, giving you a reason to stay in the area and seek revenge, rather than returning to civilization. But while every Farcry before took you to a different exotic location (tropical islands, africa, himalayas etc.), in Farcry 5 you do battle in the lush American heartlands, amidst apple orchards and glistening creeks teeming with fish, amidst rolling hills, crop fields, pine forests and country roads, log cabins and trailer parks, in a location called Hope county. However, it has been taken over by a doomsday cult heralding the end of the world, who have formed a religious commune gathering sinners to offer them salvation under threat of torture if they do not comply, a commune headed by a christlike figure and his two siblings who have brainwashed them to ultimately become their disposable militia that hunt the few remaining locals for sport while being surprisingly well lawyered up and even having cult members work in the US government to not have the US national guard shut down their operation, and enough cash to buy all properties in the county, often against the wishes of the local residents, evicting them in the process, and those who didn’t flee in time lose their human rights.

You begin the game as a new deputy, accompanying your boss who has finally managed to secure an arrest warrant and your extraction team lands at the cult’s main base in a helicopter, but is quickly overpowered by the cult as you try to leave with your prize. The helicopter crashes, you get split up, your attempt at escaping the county is brief and futile, and you soon find yourself bound to a bedpost in the house of a former cult member who however thinks you can save them from the cult and decides to let you go free after giving you a basic gun and some ammo, so that you can find your team mates and save them before it is too late.

That is the premise of Farcry 5 and I remember when this game came out, it stirred some political debate among conservatives on whether it was a woke hitpiece heavy in its political messaging trying to slander the right, preppers and religious communities, but it really isnt. This is more inspired by real life cults like The Manson Family, the Childen of God or Jonestown who didn’t fit into any particular political ideology. I for one like the American setting, and they had to come up with something for it to make sense, without going all post-apocalyptic on us. This is a more realistic “state within a state” kind of scenario, and one that is potentially possible in a country with lots of land, few people per square mile in many states, a constitution that limits government, and increasingly libertarian principles the further away you go from the big cities.

So as with any Farcry game, you start off with a pistol and a pair of binocs and loot ammo off the enemies you kill. Next to the pistol, you can initially carry one more main weapon – either a loud assault rifle that makes stealth gameplay impossible, or a bow that is silent, but has a low rate of fire and demands good aim. You soon also acquire explosives of various kinds, whether it is the classic grenade, or homemade pipe bomb, or remotely detonated satchel charge, things you can craft yourself if you find the proper ingredients also on the bodies of enemies. The enemies you take down are often found threatening locals, and so you can save civilians and add to the liberation meter of each subsector of Hope county until it is fully liberated (and some even join you as sidekicks but you can only hire one at a time to follow you at first). More of this liberation progress is added to the meter if you storm an outpost held by the cult members, where you can expect a tougher fight with half a dozen or more enemies. Once all foes in the outpost’s vicinity have been killed, it changes color to your faction’s and then you can find NPCs who give additional missions or sell weapons here, but sometimes you can also find the latter out in the wilderness, where you can also hunt animals for their pelts you can then sell at the traders, and then buy unique outfits, gun skins or upgrades with the cash, but if you feel the grind is too slow, you can speed things up with the in-game premium currency called silver, bars of which are found in-game, but also purchasable as microtransactions with real life money.

There are all kinds of vehicles in the game, from quadbikes over cars, pickups and vans to speedboats, semi trucks and propeller planes, with the only downside being strict first person POV you cant switch when driving to third person like in GTA or racing games. Just like there are attachments and skins for your weapons, and heavier weapons to take down bigger targets like silos and helicopters. That’s really all there is to it in Farcry games. You drive around, and can waste time taking out patrol after patrol (which unfortunately respawn right behind you in the area you thought you had cleared and therefore not like classic RPG games where you can clear a larger area off all enemies which you can’t here) or focus on completing story related missions by driving THERE and ignoring everything in the way and thus progress faster and more meaningfully through the game rather than being caught up in small skirmishes all the time. It’s up to you. Also in which direction you go and in which order you do the quests. The game world keeps this entertaining by offering you varied locations from fishing piers to fruit stalls to small factories to auto repair shops to barns to well furnished homes to trailers to log cabins and what have you. In a sense it is the perfect game, but in another sense you can see right through the formula. That’s Farcry, for ya. You can go in guns blazing, or chuck a smoke bomb and clobber the dazed enemies with a baseball bat, or sneak up sniping one after another with your bow and throwing knives, or just pyromaniacally torch the entire area with a flamethrower setting not just the enemies but also the vegetation ablaze, or you know, using a controller, just dreamily wander about the countryside, slow-panning to take in the flora and wildlife and go fishing and bask in the sunlight and beautiful graphics, which certain times look outdated, especially during fog or in the morning, yet at other times make your jaw drop at how good things looked 6 years ago while how smooth they run compared to today’s vram hungry games that make even 1000 dollar GPUs break a sweat if you try running things at native resolution instead of using DLSS and in some cases even frame generation. The soundtrack is also great, offering a blend between relaxing country music and the eerie and captivating religious music.

And the DLC bundled in the Gold Edition even offers you a complete change of location by taking you to Nam and even to Mars. Not to mention Farcry 3 base game for FREE. Therefore, absolu friggin lutely well worth it. Hope County awaits.
